Trauma or traumatic stress is best described by first understanding the symptoms of a traumatically stressful event. The diagnostic manual (5th) Edition (DSM-5) classifies certain events such as sexual violence (rape, molestation, domestic violence, sexual abuse, psychological abuse and emotional abuse), crime related events (hijacking, robbery, assault), natural disasters, suicide of a loved one and combat as traumatic events causing traumatic stress. Witnessing any of these events happening to a second party is also classified by the DSM-5 as traumatic.
Symptoms accompanying these events include nightmares, flashbacks, anxiety, depression and avoidance behaviors that last long after the event has occurred. This can affect one’s daily functions such as getting out of bed, going to work or maintaining hygiene. If these symptoms stand out it is important for you to seek counseling as soon as possible.
It is also important to understand that there is a difference between trauma and crisis. Crisis areas that are not usually mentioned, which are highly distressing, can include divorce, relocating and becoming a blended family. These events may be distressing for a short period of time, and they can impact on your daily functioning, management of stress and other areas of your life such as, socialization, work-life balance and your relationships.
It is important to classify events in your life into either/or category to help your mind distinguish between severity and symptom timeframe of these events. Some events can, of course, be both. An example of this would be experiencing a tornado(trauma) and in turn losing your home(crisis).
Traumatic events cannot be prevented, we live in a world where anything is possible and life at some point will hand you lemons but when it does, it is important for you to address the lemons and start making lemonade before they all start to rot. If you understood all of that, great! But for those who are too burdened right now to even bother with metaphors, the point is: to seek help as soon as the traumatic or crisis event has occurred.
If you’re getting divorced on Monday, on Tuesday you should be chatting to a counselor. Don’t wait until you’re too overwhelmed, stressed, anxious or burdened to even think about dinner, never-mind counseling. If you have experienced any of the symptoms mentioned above or any of the following : memories of the traumatic event that pop up at inconvenient times and that are very clearly different from other memories, avoidance of people, places or things that remind you of the traumatic event, extremity thoughts that include ideas such as ‘no-one can be trusted’ or ‘I will never be able to heal from this event’ then it is important for you to seek help from us, as your counselors or from a psychiatrist or psychologist (whichever you are more comfortable with).
Nothing in this life is so broken that you cannot fix it. You might be thinking, ‘you definitely don’t know how broken my life is right now’ but I will leave you with Jeremiah 32:27 ‘Behold, I AM the Lord, the God of all flesh: is there anything too hard for me?’.
